How to Register

The late designer Yves Saint Laurent was thirty years old when he first visited Morocco. He immediately fell in love with the country for its culture, colours, and setting. He said “Marrakech, for me, is paradise”.

I concur on many levels. Marrakech is a city that inspires and educates. It is a crossroad where Arab, Bedouin, and European influences converge, and its Medina (old town) has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is a cacophony of colour, a maze of alleyways and streets, both affluence and poverty, and souks (markets) populated by vendors who are constantly cajoling passersby to shop their wares.

It is spices, pottery, lanterns, tiles, carpets, and oils.

It is a city that is the very definition of sensory overload, of that there is no doubt.

But underneath the marvellous chaos, Marrakech is a city that rewards those who arrive with an adventurous, easy-going spirit with an insight to a world and culture far removed from our own. And that, my friends, is what travel is all about; growth, education, and off-the-charts inspiration.

our meals and culinary excursions

meals & culinary explorations

With a combination of private cooks at our host properties and local restaurants preparing our meals, your culinary immersion will be absolute!

As we journey along, we will certainly drink copious amounts of the mint tea Morocco is known for, but we'll also try dishes that might be new to your repertoire such as tangia and tajines, a chicken pastilla that combines sweet and savoury, and Kefta.

While you might not come to Marrakech specifically for the food, I know that it will be a memorable part of your journey!

Our group will stay in two properties during this City Exploration:
seven nights in a Riad in the Medina of Marrakech and three nights in a
small hotel in the nearby countryside, in the foothills of the Atlas mountains.

Our first seven nights will be spent in the heart of the old city, staying in a beautiful riad where the energy and life of the medina unfold just beyond our door. Everything we love about this city is within easy walking distance.

For our final three nights, we’ll move to the countryside. The pace is slower here, with rolling hills, stunning views, and the distant bleating of sheep as part of the everyday rhythm.

WATCH A SHORT VIDEO OF WHAT TO EXPECT AT MARRAKECH: A CITY EXPLORATION

Q: What airport should I fly into?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A: The Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK) is the closest and is approximately 20 minutes from our first retreat location and about 1 hour from our second location.

Q: Is this retreat suitable for those who have mobility issues?

A: Unfortunately Marrakech: A City Exploration is not suited for guests with mobility challenges. We will stay in a historic building that was constructed centuries before accessibility standards were in place. As a result, there are no elevators at our riads, and all bedrooms are accessed by stairs.

In addition, many of the streets are very uneven and guests should be comfortable walking approximately 3-7 miles at a normal pace without difficulty. This amount of walking is necessary as we explore the city and enjoy our day trips.

Q: If I'd like to arrive in Marrakech early, do you have any suggestions for where I could spend a few days before the retreat begins?

A: For those who are able to take the extra time, we would strongly urge you to consider arriving in Morocco a day or two before Marrakech: A City Exploration starts. This is both to avoid the possibility of a flight delay which could eat into your precious tour time, and so that you have time to adjust to the time difference. For North Americans, Morocco is 6 – 9 hours ahead of their home time zone, so that extra day or two will really help your body catch up. As for where to stay, I have a PDF which I share in our private Facebook group with hotel, restaurant, and pre-retreat spa/hammam recomendations.

Q: How should I get to our accommodation at Marrakech: A City Exploration?

A: For those coming from the RAK airport directly to the retreat venue, transportation is included in your retreat tuition. Please discuss your travel plans with us before you book your flight so that we can be sure that the time will work to have our driver waiting for you. If you plan to stay elsewhere pre-retreat, please ask your riad/hotel to arrange transportation to you. Most riads have drivers who they work with, and are happy to provide this service to you for a modest fee.

At the end of the tour, on the 16th, transportation is included from our countryside hotel to the RAK airport. Once again, please be sure to communicate with us to be sure that the flight time you're interested in works for our driver. If you make onward plans to travel in Morocco, please discuss with your Riad/hotel if they can provide a driver for you.

Q: When should I arrive at the venue for the beginning of the tour?

A: You are welcome to arrive at our retreat location any time after 14:00 (2PM) on September 6th. So if you were planning to fly into Marrakech on the 6th, which is the first day of the retreat, you would want your flight to arrive anywhere from 12:30PM on or so. For those who are able to take the extra time, you might consider arriving in Marrakech a day before the event starts. This is both to avoid the possibility of a flight delay which could eat into your time at the retreat, and so that you have a buffer to get over jet lag. For most North Americans, Morocco is 6 – 9 hours ahead of their home time zone, so that extra day will really help you be rested and ready for the retreat. For those who are interested, we will pass on spa suggestions for a delightful day of relaxation and leisure after a long travel day as you await the beginning of our adventure.

Q: What time do we have to leave our lodging on the final day?

A: You will need to check out by 12:00 PM at the latest on the last morning of your retreat. Should your room at the property not be booked the next day, it is possible that you may be able to request a late check out (for an additional cost) from the venue, but typically they will not confirm that until closer to the retreat date.

Q: Is there internet service at the retreat location?

A: Yes, both of our accommodations at Prone to Wander: Marrakech will have wifi. That being said, I highly recommend that you pick up an inexpensive Moroccan SIM when you enter the country, or purchase an e-SIM before you leave home, which will allow you to utilize data for your smart phone. Having access to live map data on your phone is incredibly useful in the medina of Marrakesh and we will be using WhatsApp to share map points and communicate during free times, etc.

Q: I don’t speak Arabic, Berber, or French; will I find it hard to communicate with people during our excursions?

A: This is a hard one to give an accurate answer to as this will vary by individual. It will be challenging, but not impossible as many of the vendors in the markets speak enough English to get by – or have a friend nearby who does. When out with Carolyn and her team of local guides we will certainly help you out with anything that you are not able to communicate yourself.

Q: How should I dress during Marrakech: A City Exploration?

A: While there is no enforced dress code, and indeed you will see all styles of clothing worn while out and about, it is respectful to the culture that we are visiting to dress conservatively to show respect to our host nation. Suggestions will be given in the private Facebook group as we prepare for the retreat.

Q: What will the weather be like during the tour?

A: September is the end of summer/beginning of Fall in Marrakech. Although I suggest checking the forecast before your travels, in general during September the days are 30°C to 33°C (86°F - 91°F), and the evenings will be cooler, 18°C to 20°C (64°F - 68°F), sometimes requiring a sweater. Typical rainfall is 1-3 days of rain in the month.

Q: A: Are there laundry facilities at Marrakech: A City Exploration?

A: While there are no do-it yourself laundry facilities at our lodging, you may ask the hospitality teams at our Riads to do your laundry, or to arrange for it to be sent out, for a reasonable fee.

Q: What happens if I get sick during the retreat?

A: While on tour, we encourage all guests to monitor their own well-being and take precautions and preventative measures as recommended by their doctors. If a guest is exhibiting symptoms commonly associated with a contagious illness (such as a cold, flu, Covid, etc.) while on a Prone to Wander Retreat, they will be encouraged to isolate and/or wear a mask in any enclosed settings (bus, interior spaces) while with the group. Please be prepared by packing along your own N95/KN95 masks. Guests agree to support the well-being of all fellow travelers by taking personal accountability for their own health.

Q: Is the Retreat ticket refundable?

A: Due to the challenges of logistics, and the up front costs of hosting our retreats, Prone to Wander Retreats, Inc. has a firm no refund policy. We strongly encourage attendees purchase cancellation insurance to protect their investment. However, your spot is fully transferable to a friend or family member, up until a cut off date, typically approximately 6-8 weeks before the retreat (the specific date will be listed in the contract for each retreat).

What previous attendees are saying about our retreats

"My trip to Morocco with Prone to Wander Retreats was, hands down, the most incredible and pampered adventure I’ve ever experienced.

Carolyn’s beautifully curated tour included everything I was looking for: safety, rich culture, exploration, exceptional food, unforgettable shopping, and plenty of pampering. Her Moroccan team—from the riad staff to our tour guide—was outstanding and never let us down.

Every experience felt thoughtfully researched and truly special, from a cooking class under a tent in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, to a luxurious spa day in the desert, to unforgettable dinners at Marrakech’s hottest restaurants.

I recommend Prone to Wander to everyone. I loved it so much that I signed up for another adventure!”

"If you are so fortunate to attend a Marrakech retreat with Carolyn Peeler you will find it to be a nurturing, relaxing transformative space where no detail is left out including fabulous meals, interesting places to visit, and a wonderfully supportive group of women. You will find yourself, as I did, with a visionary feast of color, landscapes and architectural delights as well as having the opportunity to give back to some of the locals in a deeply meaningful way.

Carolyn has deep connections with people in Morocco that will enhance and further your connection with others and yourself. The Riads that Carolyn reserves are fantastic and beautiful with the warmth of locals deepening your experience. One of my favorite parts of the retreat is when we would arrive back at the Riads Carolyn would leave small presents for participants! So fun!

I would go back to Morocco with Carolyn in a heartbeat. And the shopping is wonderful! "

"La Dolce Vita: Antiquing Edition retreat and buying trip was an outstanding experience from beginning to end. Every stop we visited was thoughtfully curated, providing access to exceptional pieces and highly respected dealers. Each dealer had their own distinctive collections of art, antiques, and curated goods. As the owner of an antique store in the United States, I found it especially valuable to observe the variety of shop displays, vignettes, and collecting styles, which offered fresh perspective and inspiration. The experience was a perfect balance between discovery, education, and hands-on buying. Beyond the treasures I found, the trip was an enriching exploration into the world of European antiques. It refined my own “buying-eye,” expanded my personal and my store’s collection, and made the buying process feel fun and rewarding."

Carolyn is very focused on building community! The additional art and culinary classes elevated the retreat even further. Sharing meals with the artists, dealers and our hosts created meaningful connections, and time spent with the other participants deepened the sense of our collective. And immersing ourselves in the local culture—especially the food—while appreciating the history of the region made the experience as fulfilling personally as it was professionally."

"Having attended one of Carolyn’s retreats back in 2016, I was so excited to get the chance to come to another in 2025.

Arriving at the villa in Tuscany (or whatever incredible destination she is hosting) is like arriving at your long distance best friend’s house. You immediately feel cared for, special, excited and somehow at home. Each heartfelt detail is very thoughtfully handled, crafted, and presented.

Given all of this intricate planning, organizing, and extreme preparation, it’s truly amazing that Carolyn is a constant source of stability, laughter, and calm spiritedness. She and her cohorts create a magical and singular experience of sisterhood, renewal, and creativity. Your inspiration and friendships linger far after you’re obliged to depart, leaving you with memories to last a lifetime and a yearning to go back.

Life is short. Take the trip. Buy the souvenirs. Make the art. Eat the pasta!"

"The experience turned out to be so much more than I anticipated. Upon arrival I was surprised by the beauty of the 17th century farm. From the veranda I greatly enjoyed the tranquillity and beauty of the surrounding garden and the countryside in the distance. Tasteful meals from the loveable staff, served at an enchantingly laid table. Imagine meeting new friends in Tuscany and sharing stories over a fine bottle of Italian wine…!

Every day brought a surprise from our good humoured host Carolyn. Buying vintage jewelry at the antique market in Cortona together with some of “the girls”, a special dinner and wine tasting at a castle, the paper marbling workshop, the farewell dinner... were some of the many highlights of my stay.

I left my adventure re-inspired and I’m ready for more!"

"I attended La Dolce Vita for the first time in 2019. I had never done anything like this before and went in with some reservations traveling alone. It was an absolutely amazing experience. Every single person was so warm and welcoming.

Carolyn does absolutely everything with excellence. Every small little detail is planned out to perfection. I had special dietary needs and that was all pre planned and perfect.

I own Whim So Doodle, a scrapbooking store in Florida, and spend time with many artists but this took everything I have ever done to the next level. It was the most relaxing getaway I have ever had and it filled my soul. What a treat. Carolyn I don’t know anyone who can do what you do with the level of excellence in which you do it. "

Carolyn is a wonderfully kind and fun loving host and has a fantastic team supporting her. The setting was beautiful and every event we had was well planned. I’ve made great friends.

I know you want me to tell you everything we did, but no, that would spoil everything! The magic of this trip is that you will wake up every day to discover a great adventure. Go and enjoy yourself. You won’t want to leave."

"I appreciated that the scheduling was very easy, allowing ample time for breakfast with no rushing to catch a bus or make a tour. All of the activities had a level of quality that made me feel very privileged to be there and the info we got before the trip was so helpful: exchanging money, Florence airport, Transport (shuttle vans), private Facebook page, what to pack. For someone like me who had never been to Italy, each of these things gave me such peace of mind.

The goal of immersion into everyday life was fully realized. I feel re-oriented to a lifestyle I can create at home. Warmth. Hospitality. Simplicity. Quality. Pride."
